A Branch Of Atlanta Metropolitan State College's TRIO Programs
ABOUT US
The mission of Upward Bound is to encourage and assist students who are traditionally underrepresented in post-secondary education because of income, family educational background or other relevant federal, state, or institutional criteria, in the preparation for, entry to, and completion of a post-secondary education.
The Upward Bound Programs at Atlanta Metropolitan State College have been in operation since 1979. Currently, the five Upward Bound programs housed at AMSC are collectively funded to serve over 300 participants who attend twelve target high schools.
The Atlanta Metropolitan State College Upward Bound program consists of an academic year and summer component. During the academic year, Upward Bound participants meet after school for advising, tutoring and special activity sessions. The sessions may include group communication skills, development exercises, individual educational counseling and advising, career exploration, and tutoring in mathematics, science, social sciences, composition/literature and foreign language. As a result, all participants are encouraged to enroll in college preparatory courses in their respective high schools.
Educational Action plans are developed for each participant based on their final report from the summer program, needs assessment, and current high school subjects. Each educational plan is designed to assist the participant in upgrading their basic skills. During the academic year, participants may also receive supplemental instruction, tutoring, academic advising, career and interpersonal counseling, and participate in any array of cultural/educational activities.
The six-week summer component is primarily conducted on the campus of Atlanta Metropolitan State College. Program participants have access to all college facilities. In addition, participants receive an array of academic and focused social, cultural and educational activities. (College visits, cultural enrichment classes, banquets, workshops, etc.).
